Filming at New Place Hotel
New Place sits in thirty two acres of Hampshire countryside just outside Shirrell Heath and the first thing that strikes you is how much choice the place gives you. Most venues have one room and one lawn. New Place has four or five genuinely different spaces, which means a film shot here does not run out of looks by the middle of the afternoon.
The Bristol Room is the one I would pick for a smaller ceremony. Jacobean ceiling, mahogany panelling covered in coats of arms and merchant marks and a fireplace that anchors every wide shot. It seats fifty five. Dark wood is not easy to expose for, so I light the front of the room rather than relying on what comes through the windows, which keeps faces clean without making it look lit.
The Dining Room is the opposite. It is the largest space in the manor, bright and open, with the terrace and gardens behind you and ninety five seated. The Arden Suite sits away from the house in the woodland with its own terrace and bar and takes a hundred and ten. The long aisle in there is the single best walking shot on the estate. Outside, the garden ceremony and the terrace drinks reception give me the wide, loose, unposed footage that usually carries the middle of the film.
There is a proper preparation suite with beauty stations and real daylight, which is rarer than it sounds. Most bridal prep happens in a hotel room with the curtains half shut and a ring light doing the work. Daylight through a big window makes the morning footage look like the rest of the day rather than a different film.

Shannon and Ash at New Place Hotel
Shannon and Ash got married here and I filmed the whole day. If you would rather see what a wedding at New Place actually looks like than read about it, their day is the best place to start.
How I work on the day
No posing, no forced smiles, no interruptions. I film what happens and I keep out of the way while I do it. If your photographer sets something up I will use it, but I am not going to stop your day for the sake of a shot.
Filming notes for New Place Hotel
- Four spaces to work with: the Garden outside, the Bristol Room at fifty five, the Dining Room at ninety five and the Arden Suite at a hundred and ten.
- The Bristol Room is dark panelled Jacobean, so I light the front of the room rather than fighting the windows.
- The Arden Suite has the longest aisle on the estate and sits in the woodland with its own terrace and bar.
- Thirty two acres of grounds, so portraits do not have to happen on top of the drinks reception.
- A preparation suite with real daylight, which makes the morning footage match the rest of the day.
