Filming at Chewton Glen

Chewton Glen is an eighteenth century country house at New Milton, sitting in a hundred and thirty acres between the New Forest and the sea. It is the most polished venue I film at in Hampshire and it has earned that reputation, but for a film what matters is simpler than the reputation. There is a great deal of space, the grounds are beautiful in every direction and nobody is ever rushing you.

The Lake Suite takes a hundred and forty with its own private terrace and the Morning Room does up to eighty for a smaller day. Outside, the Walled Garden and the Water Garden are both licensed, and the treehouse suites will do a genuinely intimate ceremony if that is what you want. Four options is unusual and it means the weather never forces a compromise.

Seventy two bedrooms and suites, fourteen of them treehouses in the woodland, changes the whole shape of the morning. Your family are already on the estate rather than driving in from three different hotels, and the treehouses in particular give me somewhere to film the getting ready footage that looks like nowhere else in the county.

The gardens and the parkland are where I would spend fifteen minutes with you between the meal and the evening. A hundred and thirty acres means I can walk you far enough from the party that the two of you stop performing, which is the whole trick. The sea is a few minutes away too if you want it in the film.

How I work on the day

No posing, no forced smiles, no interruptions. I film what happens and I keep out of the way while I do it. If your photographer sets something up I will use it, but I am not going to stop your day for the sake of a shot.

The Walled Garden if the weather holds. Enclosed planting gives even light and a background that changes with the season, and the sound of being outdoors does as much for a film as the picture does. The Lake Suite is the strongest of the indoor rooms and its terrace makes the transition to drinks seamless.

It is the single most distinctive thing about the venue and I would take it every time. Timber, glass and woodland light give me a morning that looks like nowhere else in Hampshire. Just build in the walk, because the treehouses sit a little way from the house.

Only for the better. The day grows rather than staying flat, which gives the film a second half with some noise in it, and there is more than enough room here for that to happen without anybody feeling crowded.

If they can, yes. Seventy two rooms means almost everybody can, and a morning where the people closest to you are already on the estate is a morning I can film properly rather than spend waiting on arrivals.

Not with a plan. I will walk the route with you beforehand and agree where the couple time happens so we are not spending your drinks reception marching across a park. Fifteen minutes in the right corner is worth an hour of wandering.
