Summary

The Spinnaker Tower is unlike anywhere else I film. You are high above Portsmouth Harbour with glass on every side and the view does half of my job for me. Around 70 for the ceremony and 100 for the reception, so it is an intimate day by necessity rather than by choice.

The glass is the thing to plan around. It is wonderful, and it is also the hardest lighting situation I work in, because everything behind you is brighter than you are. I have filmed enough weddings in glass rooms to know how to handle it, but it does mean I will want to know your ceremony time early.

The other thing worth knowing is that you are at Gunwharf Quays, in the middle of a working city. Getting your guests up the tower takes longer than people expect. Build a little more time into the schedule than you think you need and the day runs beautifully.

Introduction

No posing, no forced smiles, no interruptions. In a space this size that is not simply a preference, it is the only way to work without appearing in every shot your photographer takes. I film what happens and I stay out of the way.

The Setting

It is about an hour from me in Grayshott and worth every minute of the drive. Sunset over the harbour from up there is one of the best things I get to film all year.

Filming notes for The Spinnaker Tower

  1. Around 70 for the ceremony and 100 for the reception, so an intimate day.
  2. Glass on every side. Beautiful, and the trickiest light I work in. Tell me your ceremony time early.
  3. Harbour views in every direction, so the backdrop does a great deal of the work.
  4. Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. Allow longer than you expect for getting guests up the tower.
  5. About an hour from me in Grayshott.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the trickiest light I work in, and I would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. Bright sky in every direction means faces can end up in shadow against a blown out background. It is entirely manageable if I know the ceremony time early, so tell me as soon as you have it.

Harbour in every direction, so the backdrop does a great deal of the work for me. Very few venues hand you a view like that without anybody having to walk anywhere to reach it.

Around 70 for the ceremony and 100 for the reception, so it is an intimate day by design. That suits filming. Smaller rooms mean more conversation and more moments actually worth keeping.

Allow longer than you expect for getting guests up the tower. It is the single thing that most often puts a Spinnaker day behind schedule and a late start eats into the portrait time rather than into anything you would happily lose.

Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, about an hour from me in Grayshott. I have filmed there and I am happy to talk through how the day usually runs before you commit to it.
