Filming at Hedingham Castle

Hedingham Castle is in Essex, a fair drive from me in Surrey, and I would do it again tomorrow. The Norman keep has been standing for around nine hundred years and it is one of the most complete of its kind anywhere in the country. Filming inside it feels less like being at a wedding venue and more like being let into somewhere you probably should not be.

The way the day splits here is worth knowing about. 130 for the ceremony, 70 for the wedding breakfast inside the castle itself, then up to 150 in the marquee with another 50 joining you in the evening. That is three genuinely different spaces, which means three different looks on the finished film rather than one room shot from four corners.

How I work on the day

No posing and no interruptions. I am not going to line your guests up or ask you to do the first kiss again for my benefit. I film the day as it happens and I stay quiet while I do it. Where your photographer is setting something up, I work alongside them rather than across them.

It works very much in your favour. The keep, the wedding breakfast and the marquee look nothing like each other, so the film gets real variety without me having to manufacture it. Most venues hand me one room and one lawn and I have to work harder for the same result.
