Filming at Chilworth Manor

Chilworth Manor sits in twelve acres of gardens at Chilworth, two miles north of Southampton, with another twenty seven acres of conservation land wrapped around it. It is a country house that happens to run as a hotel, so a wedding here starts and finishes in the same place. For me that means no travelling gap in the middle of the day and no missed hour while everybody drives between a church and a reception.

Four of the rooms are licensed. The GK Chesterton was the library and it is still the one most couples pick, with the light coming in from one side, which is exactly what a ceremony wants. The Lord Selborne seats seventy six and the Coach House takes a hundred and forty for the wedding breakfast and two hundred in the evening, with its own bar and anteroom.

Ninety five bedrooms is the number that changes my morning. Almost everybody is already on site, so getting ready, the arrivals and the first drink all happen within a few minutes of each other instead of being spread across three villages. It buys back an hour of filming that most venues quietly take away from you.

The gardens are the reason to give me twenty minutes between the meal and the evening. Twelve acres of lawn and planting means I can walk you somewhere quiet, and that walk is usually where the best two minutes of the film get made.

Rachel and Thomas at Chilworth Manor

Rachel and Thomas got married at Chilworth Manor and I filmed the whole day. If you would rather see what a wedding here actually looks like than read about it, their teaser is below.

How I work on the day

No posing, no forced smiles, no interruptions. I film what happens and I keep out of the way while I do it. If your photographer sets something up I will use it, but I am not going to stop your day for the sake of a shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, it carries on being a hotel around you. In practice it makes very little difference to the film. The wedding suites and their terraces are yours for the day and I plan the quiet shots for the parts of the house that belong to you, so nobody else appears in your film.

The GK Chesterton. It was the library and it still reads like one, and the window light falls across the aisle rather than behind it, which is the difference between faces and silhouettes. The Coach House is the better room once the evening starts.

Only for the better. The day grows instead of staying flat, which gives the film a second half with some noise in it. I will be by the doors when the evening guests arrive because that reunion is worth more than any staged shot.

If they can, yes. Ninety five rooms means almost everybody can, and a morning where the grandparents are already in the building is a morning I can film properly rather than chase.

In your room, and then in the gardens if the weather allows. The rooms are ordinary hotel rooms rather than a dedicated bridal suite, so I will find the window with the best light and work from there.

Questions about packages, pricing and how long the films take to arrive are answered on my full FAQ page. Anything specific to Chilworth Manor that is not here, just ask me.
