Filming at The Square Tower
The Square Tower was built in 1494 and it has been standing on the harbour wall at Old Portsmouth ever since, which makes it comfortably the oldest building I film weddings in. The walls are several feet thick, the doors are studded oak and the harbour mouth is directly outside. None of that has to be dressed or lit to look like something.
Two rooms are licensed. The Lower Hall takes a hundred seated or standing and the Upper Hall takes eighty, so the tower can do the ceremony in one and the meal in the other without anybody leaving the building. That is a rare thing in a historic venue and it keeps the day together.
The reason to film here is what is outside the door. Broad Street, the Point, the Round Tower and the harbour entrance are all within a two minute walk, and the ferries and warships going past give the background something no country house can offer. Ten minutes out there is worth an hour anywhere else.
There is no accommodation at the tower, so the morning happens in Old Portsmouth or Southsea and everybody converges on Broad Street. Give me half an hour wherever you are getting ready and the front of the film still holds its shape. Parking is tight down there, which is worth telling your guests before the day rather than on it.

How I work on the day
No posing, no forced smiles, no interruptions. I film what happens and I keep out of the way while I do it. If your photographer sets something up I will use it, but I am not going to stop your day for the sake of a shot.
Filming notes for The Square Tower
- Built in 1494, so the walls do the work that a stylist would have to do anywhere else.
- Two licensed halls, a hundred downstairs and eighty upstairs, so nobody has to leave the building.
- The harbour mouth, the Point and the Round Tower are all a two minute walk away.
- No accommodation on site, so the morning happens elsewhere in Old Portsmouth.
- Stone interiors are darker than they look, so I work on fast lenses rather than lighting the room.
