Summary

Botley’s is a Grade II listed eighteenth century manor house near Chertsey and it is the largest venue I regularly film at. Up to 280 for the ceremony and as many as 500 in the evening. A wedding on that scale is a genuinely different job and I plan for it differently.

With 500 people you cannot cover a room the way you can with 80, so I stop trying. I stay close to the two of you and to the handful of people who matter most to you and I let the crowd be the backdrop rather than the subject. It makes a far better film than sweeping the room all evening.

Introduction

The house itself does a great deal of the work. Eighteenth century proportions, high ceilings and the sort of staircase that was built to be walked down slowly. There is no shortage of places to film here.

The Setting

There are 11 rooms on site, which is not many for a wedding of this size, so most of your guests will be staying elsewhere. Worth knowing when you are planning the end of the night and the morning after.

Frequently Asked Questions

By staying close to you. At this scale a wide shot of the room says almost nothing, so I work near the two of you and let the crowd be the background rather than the subject. It makes a better film and it keeps the day calmer than having someone circling with a camera.

The staircase. It was built to be walked down slowly, which is exactly what a camera wants. Very few venues give you a genuine entrance and this one does it without you having to stage anything.

It matters to your morning more than to mine. Most of your guests will be staying elsewhere, so tell me where you are getting ready and I will plan the start of the day around the travel rather than discovering it on the morning itself.

Not in practice. I do not attach anything to the building and I do not move furniture. An eighteenth century house gives me plenty to frame against without needing to change a thing about it.

Busier rather than harder. There is more happening at once, which means more genuinely unposed moments to catch. The trade is that I have to choose, so tell me in advance who matters most to you and I will make sure they are in the film.
