Filming at Brookfield Barn

Brookfield Barn sits on Winterpit Lane south of Horsham in twenty two acres of West Sussex countryside, with a lake that most of the venue looks out over. It goes out on exclusive use, so the whole place is yours for the day and nobody else is being shown round the grounds while you are having your photographs taken.

The lake is the reason the films from here look the way they do. Water throws light back up at people, which is flattering at any hour and genuinely lovely in the last hour before sunset. I will always ask for ten minutes down at the water, and I have yet to have a couple regret it.

Inside, the Barn takes a hundred and thirty eight for the wedding breakfast and two hundred through the evening, with the Lounge and Bar and the Lakeview alongside it. There is an outdoor ceremony space if the weather cooperates, and the outdoor kitchen means the middle of the day can happen in the open air rather than everybody filing back indoors.

Eleven bedrooms, including the honeymoon suite, means the morning starts where the day is going to happen. The preparation room has proper daylight, so the first part of the film is faces and hands rather than a dim hotel corner, and nobody spends the morning in a car.

How I work on the day

No posing, no forced smiles, no interruptions. I film what happens and I keep out of the way while I do it. If your photographer sets something up I will use it, but I am not going to stop your day for the sake of a shot.

  1. Exclusive use, so there is no second event to work around and no shared car park.
  2. Eleven bedrooms on site including the honeymoon suite, so the morning starts here.
  3. The lake bounces light back at you, which makes the last hour before sunset the best of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the main reason I like filming here. With the whole site yours I can walk the barn, the bar and the lakeside while they are still empty and get the wide shots that set the film up. On a shared site those shots either do not exist or they have other people in them.

Yes, and it is the one thing I would build ten minutes into the timeline for. Water reflects light upwards, which softens faces, and in the hour before sunset it does something no lighting kit can imitate. Ten minutes, no posing, and it usually becomes the middle of the film.

Only for the better. The day grows instead of staying flat, and with the outdoor kitchen and the bar the evening spreads out rather than everybody standing in one room. I will be near the doors when the evening guests arrive.

If they can, yes. Eleven rooms means the people who matter most are already there in the morning, which is the difference between filming a family and filming a countdown to their arrival.

There is an outdoor ceremony space and it films very well, with the countryside behind you rather than a wall. Keep the barn as the backup and decide on the morning. I can move either way in about five minutes.
